Joshua Tree (ground of being)
Joshua Tree (ground of being)
oil on plywood, wood carving
78"X45"X10
2017

Painting in dry southern Ca. focused my attention on
ground conditions rather than foliage. 'Ground' in the painter's
lexicon is the underlayer upon which paint is applied, in this case
a sheet of 1/2" plywood. After the painting, in oils, dried hard I scraped
parts of the surface to reveal the plywood grain pattern that had caused me to choose that piece in the first place. I was encouraged by images of mirage, waterflow and "the ground of being".
